Looking beyond the Earth, available evidence suggests that silicon's affinity for oxygen is ubiquitous. Physical samples from within our solar system (such as meteorites, cometary dust, and lunar rocks returned by the Apollo and Luna missions) contain Si in compounds that do not differ radically from those indigenous to Earth. Spectroscopy enables Si-bearing compounds far beyond our solar system to be characterized as well, including those in the interstellar clouds from which new planetary systems are being born, and they are found to be composed almost entirely of silicates such as enstatite (MgSiO3) and fosterite (Mg2SiO4) that form a major component of interstellar dust. An exception occurs in the atmospheres of certain 'red giant' stars enriched in carbon, where observations show silicon carbide (SiC) to be the preferred form. More generally, environments favorable to the production of a limited number of organosilicon compounds might be possible, but this would require a highly unusual local distribution of the elemental abundances, with a dearth of free oxygen. Given the ubiquity of O, which is third on the list of the most abundant chemical elements in the cosmos (see chapter 2), such environments seem likely to be extremely rare. Similar objections apply to other tetravalent elements such as germanium (Ge), which has the additional disadvantage of being very much less abundant than either C or Si. As Carl Sagan remarked many years ago in his book The Cosmic Connection (1973), in attempting to shed geocentric 'chauvinisms' when considering the possibilities for extraterrestrial life, carbon chauvinism is the one that seems hardest to overcome. In summary, all the available evidence suggests that carbon-based organic chemistry is the only realistic foundation for naturally occurring biological life in the Universe.
